SEND is an electronic system that allows all clinical users to view the data in the graphical form optimal for understanding the patient’s condition. SEND has resulted in high levels of clinician satisfaction and the most successful IT implementation in the hospital trust's history.

Early detection of unwell patients in hospital, and the timeliness and clinical level of response are predictors of the subsequent outcome for the patient. To aid in the interpretation of patient health, a number of physiological measurements are routinely taken to summarise the patient’s condition. Our System for Electronic Notification and Documentation, or SEND, is an electronic system that allows all clinical users to view the data in a graphical form optimal for understanding the patient’s condition. We used a range of human factors methods to translate a paper-based task to computerised, taking the opportunity to understand improvements that can be made to the task, and where increases in patient safety can be made.
